Men's Golf Rallies to Place Second at Bellsouth Intercollegiate

Lynch, Gioffre finish in top five individually.

April 13, 1998

CARY, N.C.-- A furious rally by the Wake Forest men's golf team fell just short as the Demon Deacons finished second to UNLV in the BELLSOUTH Yellow Pages Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, held at the 6,829-yard, par-72 course at MacGregor Downs Country Club.

The Deacs stood sixth out of 10 teams after shooting an 8-over 296 the first round on Friday, but the team rallied to post their lowest team scores of the year with a 2-under 286 and a 1-under 287 in the final two rounds. UNLV, the nation's top-ranked team, shot 287-283-298=868 and barely withstood Wake's late surge to earn the team title by one stroke.

The Runnin' Rebels' Jeremy Anderson took individual medalist honors in the tournament, finishing with a 54-hole total of 6-under 210. Wake senior Todd Lynch (Winston-Salem, NC/North Forsyth) fired three straight subpar rounds to finish in second place at 4-under par, firing 71-70-71. Also finishing in the top 10 was senior Ryan Gioffre (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) who shot a season-low 69 in the second round and finished in fourth place at 1-under for the tournament.

Junior Michael Capone (Cranston, RI/Bishop Hendricken) finished just one stroke out of the top 20, carding a 71 in the final round to finish tied for 21st at 6-over. Junior Juan Vizcaya (Madrid, Spain/Retamar) tied his career-low round with a 69 on the final day to finish tied for 38th at 11-over, while senior Thomas Parker (Laurinburg, NC/Scotland) tied for 44th at 14-over par. Wake is next in action at the ACC Championships, held April 17-19 at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, NC.
