Rising junior Maggie Simons of the Wake Forest women's golf team captured the 2005 North Carolina Women's State Amateur title in Greensboro, N.C., on Thursday. Simons carded rounds of 71, 69 and 73 on the par 73, 5,828 yard Sedgefield Country Club golf course to claim the crown at the 56th annual championship.
Simons held off Jessie Vincent of Burlington, N.C., who finished second with a combined 215. Paige Haverty of Greenville, N.C., (217), Patty Moore of Charlotte, N.C., (221), and Molly Birmingham of Cornelius, N.C., (222) rounded out the top-five.
During the 2004-05 season, Simons posted three top-25 finishes, including a then-career best ninth place finish at the Lady Gator Invitational. She carded a personal best 69 at the first round of the Franklin Street Partners, a total which she matched in round two of this week's tournament. She contributed 83 percent of her rounds towards team scoring throughout the year and finished with the fourth best Deacon score differential on the team. Simons was one of only three Deacons to compete in all ten tournaments during the season.
