Women's Tennis Falls Short Against No. 16 North Carolina

March 31, 2005

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team dropped a closely fought ACC match on Thursday against 16th ranked North Carolina. The Demon Deacons dropped to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the ACC with the 4-3 loss to the Tar Heels.

The Deacons dropped the early doubles point, but each match went down to the wire. Number one was particularly close, however, the Deacon doubles team of Ashlee Davis and Katie Martzolf fell 9-7 to North Carolina's Cline/Mojzis. The 15th ranked team of Karin Coetzee and Alex Hirsch were the only winners for Wake Forest in doubles by beating Long/Anundsen 8-4. At number three doubles, Blakely Offutt and Danielle Schwartz fell to Collins/Markovic 8-4

Wake Forest and North Carolina split wins in the six singles spots, however, that was not enough to get the Demon Deacon win. Coetzee was a winner at number two singles beating 20th ranked Kendall Cline 6-0, 6-1. Hirsch knocked off Caitlin Collins 6-4, 6-2 at number four singles, and Jenna Loeb defeated Charlotte Tansill 6-2, 6-3 at the number six spot. Despite a hard fought effort, the Deacons fell 4-3 to the Tar Heels.

Wake Forest will attempt to get their third ACC win of the year in their second consecutive home match on Sunday at noon against Miami.
